“Wouldn’t it be great if there was some accountability in the rental housing industry?” This is how Housemate began — as a conversation between best friends with experience on both the landlord and tenant sides of the fence. Good landlords put a ton of effort into vetting tenants, maintaining their property, maybe even paying property management companies, or realtors, to fill their vacancy. Only to get ghosted, find out the tenant can’t afford the unit, or worst of all — end up with a tenant that trashes their home. Good tenants have entered into lease agreements in good faith, providing rental deposits, only to show up to get the keys and find out they’ve been swindled.
